Paula West With the Adam Shulman Trio – San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2018
From the American Songbook to folk classics, Paula West sings with a creative impulse to make each song her own. Inspired by musicians like Bob Dylan, West adapts a wide variety of music into a jazz context. Both her studio albums and live performances brim with soulful sophistication and imagination.
West fell in love with the jazz tradition as a college student, absorbing every detail from recordings of Sarah Vaughan and Maxine Sullivan. After moving to San Francisco from her native San Diego, she further honed her craft and began performing around the city. Since then, she has performed at Yoshi’s San Francisco, New York’s Birdland, and at the White House for a celebration of American writers. In the studio and on the bandstand, West has collaborated with jazz legends Bobby Hutcherson, Rosemary Clooney and Peter Bernstein, among other greats.
Her latest album, Live at Jazz Standard, features her silky vocals atop the sensitive accompaniment of the late George Mesterhazy quartet. Covering the spectrum from jazz classics like “My Romance” to folk ballads like Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice,” the record showcases West’s versatility as a vocalist and her broad palette as an arranger. Having performed in New York, Israel and Japan, West always returns to California, where she has earned a loyal and eager following.
