In The Heights SJSU Film & Theatre, SJSU School of Music & Dance
San José State University students collaborate with San José native and vocal consultant Jesse Sanchez from the national tour of Hamilton to bring you the Broadway hit, In the Heights, by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hammer Theatre patrons can enjoy the original Broadway set converted for this university production.
In the Heights tells the story of a Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City.
“Told as a series of interweaving vignettes about the highs and lows—and the dreams and realities—of life in the neighborhood, In the Heights offers audiences a very likable three-day glimpse into a specific multi-generational Latinx experience that not only feels fresh and new but also feels remarkably relatable no matter what background you come from” (Onstage Blog).
The characters are relatable and charming, full of triumph and angst as they struggle to reach the elusive American Dream. The play blends a variety of catchy tunes with a score featuring hip-hop, salsa, merengue, and soul music.
The New York Times praises Lin-Manuel Miranda as “a gifted young composer” for creating “a singing mural of Latin-American life that often has the inspiriting flavor of a morning pick-me-up on a warm summer day. Light and sweet are actually just the words to describe this amiable show, which boasts an infectious, bouncy Latin-pop score.”
And the Theatre Guide Review calls this Broadway “a winning musical lottery ticket to local theatergoers…an abundance of talent, technical expertise, a solid score, and humanity in the story that makes In the Heights a must-see experience.”
Come see this famous musical that speaks with hope and song to the dream of succeeding in America!
