SUMMARY:Black Cab Jazz - Melissa Aldana
DESCRIPTION:On her first jazz quartet album Visions\, award-winning saxophonist Melissa Aldana connects her work to the legacy of Latina artists who have come before her\, creating a pathway for her  own expression. Inspired by the life and works of Frida Kahlo\, Aldana creates a parallel between her experiences as a female saxophone player in a male-dominated community\, and Kahlo’s experiences as a female visual artist working to assert herself in a landscape dominated by men. On Visions\, Aldana adds a new dimension to her sound\, resulting in a transformative movement of expression and self-identity. \nAldana was born in Santiago\, Chile. She began playing the saxophone when she was six\, under the influence and tuition of her father Marcos Aldana\, also a professional saxophonist. Aldana began with alto\, influenced by artists such as Charlie Parker\, Cannonball Adderley\, and Michael Brecker. However\, upon first hearing the music of Sonny Rollins\, she switched to tenor; the first tenor saxophone she used was a Selmer Mark VI that had belonged to her grandfather. \nShe started performing in Santiago jazz clubs in her early teens. In 2005\, after meeting him while he was on tour in Chile\, she was invited by pianist Danilo Pérez to play at the Panama Jazz Festival\, as well as a number of auditions at music schools in the USA. As a result of these introductions she went on to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston\, where her tutors included Joe Lovano\, George Garzone\, Frank Tiberi\, Greg Osby\, Hal Crook\, Bill Pierce\, and Ralph Peterson. \nAldana graduated from Berklee in 2009\, relocating to New York City to study under George Coleman. She recorded her first album\, Free Fall\, released on Greg Osby’s Inner Circle Music imprint in 2010. Her live shows in this period included performances at the Blue Note Jazz Club and the Monterey Jazz Festival\, and her second album\, Second Cycle\, was released in 2012. In 2013\, aged 24\, she was the first female musician and the first South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition\, in which her father had been a semi-finalist in 1991. The prize was a $25\,000 scholarship\, and a recording contract with Concord Jazz. Reporting her win\, the Washington Post described Aldana as representing “a new sense of possibility and direction in jazz.” \nIn addition\, Aldana has been awarded the Altazor National Arts Award of Chile\, and the Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award. She has played concerts alongside artists such as Peter Bernstein\, Kevin Hays\, Christian McBride\, and Jeff “Tain” Watts\, and many festivals including the Copenhagen Jazz Festival\, Twin Cities Jazz Festival\, Umbria Jazz\, Vienna Jazz Festival\, and Providencia Jazz Festival in Chile. She also performed with Jimmy Heath at the 2014 NEA Jazz Masters Award Ceremony\, and was invited to Jazz at Lincoln Center by Wynton Marsalis. \nIn 2012 Aldana had formed a group\, Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio\, with Cuban drummer Francisco Mela and Chilean bassist Pablo Menares\, a friend from the jazz scene in Santiago several years prior. In July 2014 this group released their self-titled debut album on Concord Jazz\, a recording deal that had formed part of Aldana’s prize for winning the Thelonious Monk Award. The group released their second album in March 2016 titled Back Home\, on Word of Mouth Music\, with drummer Mela replaced by Jochen Rueckert.

SUMMARY:SJZ: WinterFest: Sheléa w/ SJSU Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Sheléa’s sultry sound is an exciting oasis in an age of auto-tune; blending traditional pop\, jazz\, R&B\, and soul\, she brings a contemporary edge to classics and a classic touch to contemporary pop standards. \nSheléa began as a songwriter/vocalist with legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. This early experience led to writing and producing for Chanté Moore’s album Love the Woman and recording vocals on major motion picture soundtracks for Hotel Rwanda\, Akeelah and the Bee\, and Be Cool. Sheléa’s debut album Love Fell On Me was released in 2014\, featuring heavyweights Stevie Wonder\, Brian McKnight\, and Narada Michael Walden. \nIn 2012\, Sheléa performed at the White House to honor composers Burt Bacharach and Hal David with the Gershwin Prize. Then\, in 2015\, she headlined a tour with Kirk Whalum\, Gerald Albright\, and Norman Brown\, and soon after joined mentor Stevie Wonder for his Songs in the Key of Life tour. In 2016\, Sheléa returned to the White House to perform with Anthony Hamilton as part of PBS’ Smithsonian Salute to Ray Charles. Then\, in 2017\, Sheléa had the distinct honor of being selected by Quincy Jones to be the first vocalist for his jazz club Q’s Bar and Lounge at the Palazzo Versace Dubai where she performed a month-long residency. In 2012\, she joined Annie Lennox\, Herbie Hancock\, Joan Osborne\, Patti Austin\, and the South African Children’s Choir at the Kennedy Center to perform for the UN International AIDS Conference. Most recently\, in 2019\, Sheléa starred in the concert special QUINCY JONES PRESENTS: SHELÉA broadcast on PBS. Soon after this\, she released her much-anticipated third album Pretty World: Through the Eyes of Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

SUMMARY:Catalyst Quartet w/ Imani Winds (Borderlands)
DESCRIPTION:Two leading chamber ensembles join forces for a program that combines their high-energy virtuosity and brilliant programming. The concert features a new work composed by Catalyst Quartet violinist\, Jessie Montgomery\, that was inspired by her great-grandfather’s experience during the Great Migration in the United States.  \nImani Winds \nOver the course of their 20-plus year career\, Grammy-nominated quintet Imani Winds\, has discovered what audiences value most from their concerts: a sense of connection—with the music\, the performers\, the composers\, the artistry\, and beyond. Extolled by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “what triumph sounds like”\, Imani Winds has created a distinct presence in the classical music world through their dynamic playing\, culturally relevant programming\, virtuosic collaborations\, and inspirational outreach programs.  \nCatalyst Quartet  \nHailed by the New York Times at their Carnegie Hall debut as “invariably energetic and finely burnished…playing with earthy vigor\,” Catalyst Quartet is comprised of top Laureates and alumni of the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Competition. SUMMARY:Black Cab Jazz — Matt Wilson Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Few musicians embody the spontaneous energy of jazz like Matt Wilson. The New York-based drummer combines buoyant zeal\, idiosyncratic style\, infectious humor\, joyous swing\, and an indomitable spirit of surprise. Together\, with his universally recognized personal warmth\, these qualities have made Wilson one of the most in-demand players and educators on the modern jazz scene\, both beloved and respected by his peers\, elders\, and students. Not bad for a mischievous Midwestern boy from Knoxville\, Illinois. \nWhether anchoring an all-star group at the White House\, juggling tricky rhythmic swerves with his own quartets\, celebrating the holidays with his Christmas Tree-O\, exploring the poetry of Carl Sandburg\, sensitively supporting vocalists such as Dena DeRose\, presenting concerts at a neighborhood church\, or donning a superhero cape to inspire young musicians to embrace their individuality\, Wilson approaches music as a man on a mission: fostering a lively and passionate connection between music and people\, whether they be playing or listening to it. \n\n \n\nBlack Cab Jazz is a brand new collaboration between San Jose Jazz\, San José State University\, and the Hammer Theatre\, bringing to you an intimate cabaret experience featuring some of the best names in modern jazz.

SUMMARY:Black Cab Jazz — Quiana Lynell
DESCRIPTION:Please note the change of date from Friday\, November 8th to Saturday\, November 9th. Thank you.\n\nIn 2017\, Quiana Lynell made her salient mark on the jazz-and-beyond musical world as a wise\, heartfelt\, warm vocalist whose voice is singular in its soul\, intensity\, ecstasy\, and outright spiritual courage. She played with her trio at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival which led to her performing in Poland with trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s Spike Lee tribute with a 75-piece orchestra. \nWhen Lynell takes the stage\, she guides listeners on a journey where “jazz collides with soul”\, allowing the simplest of melodies to entrance the listener. Lynell creates an environment where love is paramount\, emphasizing the importance of self-worth and respect through her music. She speaks uplifting lyrics to those who have been broken hearted and stresses the importance of not letting the past dictate your future. \nLynell sees each opportunity to share music with any audience as a chance to create memories and build the soundtrack of life. Whether she is leading the band or supporting other artists\, she is thankful to have the opportunity to sketch new memories that last a lifetime.   \n\nhttps://vimeo.com/296732372 \n\nBlack Cab Jazz is a brand new collaboration between San Jose Jazz\, San José State University\, and the Hammer Theatre\, bringing to you an intimate cabaret experience featuring some of the best names in modern jazz.

SUMMARY:Black Cab Jazz — Kendrick Scott Oracle
DESCRIPTION:Drummer and composer Kendrick Scott kicked off his Blue Note contract four years ago with We Are The Drum. Expertly produced by Derrick Hodge\, Scott’s creative confidant and musical brother\, and featuring a stunning guest performance by vocalist\, Lizz Wright\, it earned rave reviews and reiterated how Oracle\, Scott’s long-running working group\, is one of the most thoughtfully powerful jazz bands of its generation.  \nThroughout his time at the helm of his own group\, Scott has employed the lessons he’s learned as a sideman working with jazz’s great bandleaders. Like Blanchard\, Scott encourages his players to exercise their personalities and to contribute music. He has also performed regularly as part of Charles Lloyd’s band\, and has adapted the tenor legends’s sense of trust and intuition to define Oracle. “The main thing I learned from Charles is that everybody needs to take ownership\,” he says. “I feel like what makes Oracle Oracle is that each member has ownership of the band. They have ownership of the music and ownership of the intent.”  \nAs far back as he can recall\, Scott\, who was born in Houston in 1980\, has imbued his music with deeper meaning. “Coming up in church\,” he says\, “You played music for a message; you played music for a purpose. Oracle lives in that space\, no matter what we’re playing.” Like his fellow Houston drum-greats\, Harland and Jamire Williams\, Scott grew up with a mother who was an acclaimed gospel choir director. On top of that bedrock\, he developed his technique through private mentorship and public jazz education\, spurred on by an environment of fierce but brotherly competition. He moved to New York in 2003 and raised his profile performing and recording for Blue Note in trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s band\, alongside future Blue Note Artists Hodge\, pianist Aaron Parks\, and guitarist Lionel Loueke).  \nOracle:\nKendrick Scott: drums\nMike Moreno: guitar\nTaylor Eigsti: piano\nBrandon Owens: bass\n\n \n\nBlack Cab Jazz is a brand new collaboration between San Jose Jazz\, San José State University\, and the Hammer Theatre\, bringing to you an intimate cabaret experience featuring some of the best names in modern jazz.

SUMMARY:Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble & Hasmik Harutyunyan present GORANI: Lullabies and Love Songs to Lost Homelands
DESCRIPTION:Kitka Women’s Ensemble and renowned Armenian folk singer\, Hasmik Harutyunyan\, are pleased to present Gorani: Love Songs to Lost Homelands\, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935)\, a composer\, folk song collector\, and icon in the history of Armenia. \nOne of Armenia’s leading folk singers\, Harutyunyan has received international acclaim for her mellifluous renditions of Armenian lullabies and her work with Yerevan’s Shoghaken Ensemble. Her nuanced and passionate interpretations of traditional melodies from historical villages across the Armenian plateau offer a mesmerizing glimpse into a lost world. \nTogether with Kitka’s eight vocalists\, Harutyunyan will perform a program featuring lullabies and love songs\, as well as emigrant and work songs\, many collected and arranged by Komitas\, considered the founder of modern Armenian classical music\, and a pioneer in the field of ethnomusicology. Thanks to his painstaking work\, countless traditional songs survived the Armenian Genocide. \n\n \n\nAbout Hasmik Harutyunyan\nHarutyunyan draws strength and inspiration from her ancestors in the province of Moush in historic (Western) Armenia\, especially her grandmother\, Mafo\, who sang to her as a child. In addition to songs sung by her family\, Harutyunyan learned many of the songs in her repertoire from elder women who had emigrated from Western to Eastern Armenia before or during the Armenian Genocide of 1914-1923\, as well as from their descendants and old song collections. \nHarutyunyan’s Shoghaken Ensemble has performed throughout Armenia\, Georgia\, Russia\, the United Arab Emirates\, Europe\, and North America. In 2002\, the Ensemble was honored to take part in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. Their music can also be heard on the soundtrack of the film Ararat. Harutyunyan passes her cultural heritage on to the next generation as director of the Hayrik Mouradyan Children’s Traditional Song and Dance Ensemble. SUMMARY:Joshua Radin and The Weepies
DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Joshua Radin and iconic indie duo The Weepies will be teaming up this fall in a tour presented by SiriusXM’s The Coffee House with special guest Lily Kershaw. Both artists’ music have been a mainstay on Coffee House playlist. \n“I’ve been a big fan of SiriusXM’s Coffee House channel for many years.” states Radin. “I’m so pleased to announce that they are presenting my upcoming tour this fall. I’ll be playing new and old songs\, my newest album will be released\, and I’ll be joined by my old friends\, The Weepies. Can’t wait to see all of you.” \nThe Weepies echo this sentiment\, saying\, “We are excited to be supported by SiriusXM’s Coffee House for our fall tour. Touring alongside Joshua Radin is a big bonus – he’s a sweet songwriter and friend from LA we’ve known for more than 10 years. We can’t wait!” \nTickets are going fast! \nArtist Bios \nLove and the complications surrounding it have long proven to be Joshua Radin’s songwriting forte. Though he never intended to be a live performer\, there was little choice when the first song he ever wrote\, “Winter\,” was featured on an episode of “Scrubs.” The resulting fervor around the song soon led to a record deal\, and over the last decade\, Radin has toured the world countless times\, sold hundreds of thousands of records and topped the iTunes charts\, earned raves from Rolling Stone to The Guardian\, performed on “The Tonight Show\,” “Conan\,” and more\, played Ellen DeGeneres’ wedding at her personal request\, and had his songs featured in more than 150 different films\, commercials\, and TV shows. \nSinger-songwriters Deb Talan & Steve Tannen began writing together the night they met\, and soon formed indie band The Weepies. On the strength of their simple yet insightful songwriting and distinctive harmonies\, they quietly sold more than 1.5 million records with over 54 million streams on Spotify\, 25+ million views on YouTube\, and over 110k social media followers. They married and had three children\, rarely touring but continuing to release their music; five records over seven years.
