SUMMARY:Bang-Bang You're Dead!
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Film and Theatre’s School Touring Ensemble Program (STEP) presents its theatrical production of Bang Bang You’re Dead! written by William Mastrosimone and directed by Buddy Butler\, to help enable and empower students to put an end to the escalating trend of violence and bullying in schools today. \nRIPPED FROM TODAY’S HEADLINES. This play tackles the subject of mass school shootings from the point of view of the shooter. The goal is to help middle and high school students understand the tragedies and complexities of school violence and to take preventive actions against it. Bang Bang You’re Dead! urges today’s generation to take control and fix this problem now… \nMastrosimone appeals to potential killers to change their mindset—that in making the choice to bring a gun to school there is nothing to be gained and everything to lose. Furthermore\, he asks all students to be aware and diligent when it comes to violent threats from their peers. Bang Bang You’re Dead! is a resource for dealing with a broken world that’s violent\, unhealthy\, unfair\, and beyond the power of anyone to fix except today’s generation. \nTHE TIME TO STOP SCHOOL VIOLENCE IS NOW! \nBang Bang You’re Dead! will tour local and Bay Area schools during the week of November 17th\, 2019 and play at the Hammer Theatre Center’s Hammer 4 Theatre for four performances. December 4th\, 5th\, and 6th @11 AM for school matinees and December 7th @ 7PM for a public performance. All performances are free and will have a talk-back following.

SUMMARY:Dreamer Project: an undocuplay — Borderlands
DESCRIPTION:Dreamer Project: an undocuplay is a verbatim theatre piece created from interviews with SJSU undocumented students. The play focuses on the continuing journeys of undocumented students from Mexico and Central America\, and the issues surrounding these young people who seek to find a home in the U.S..  \nBy showing the challenges each faces as SJSU students\, as well as personal stories of childhood and family\, we come to know them not just as “undocumented” but as human beings navigating an extraordinary time in our history.  \nThis is the story of our students.

SUMMARY:Borderlands — A Conversation with Sonia Nazario
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive talk with Sonia Nazario\, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist for The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times. Her stories and articles have tackled some of this country’s most intractable problems: hunger\, drug addiction\, imimigration. \nNazario has won numerous national journalism and book awards. In 2003\, her story of a Honduran boy’s struggle to find his mother in the U.S.\, entitled “Enrique’s Journey”\, won more than a dozen awards\, among them the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. Her endeavor to make a trip from Honduras to the U.S. atop Mexico’s dangerous trains to bring Enrique’s journey to life is both incredible and awe-inspiring and her talks are sure to provide rich educational and cultural experiences for attendees.
