SUMMARY:MUMMENSCHANZ — You and Me
DESCRIPTION:For nearly five decades\, MUMMENSCHANZ has been the epitome of contemporary mask theater worldwide\, crossing language barriers and cultures. Without spoken word\, purely visually\, and completely without music and set design\, only with masks and bodies against a black background\, the artists appear. \nThe MUMMENSCHANZ theater was created in 1972 in Paris\, on the tremendous momentum of its three founders\, after a very instructive school and study period during the sixties and after a three-year experimental trial in various disciplines. \nAfter more than 10 years of creative experimentation and research in all sorts of theaters in Germany and abroad\, accompanied by a passionate love of playing\, including a 3-year Broadway performance (from 1977 to ‘79)\, MUMMENSCHANZ crossed the threshold and began to perform for the whole wide world. With a repertoire of over 100 techniques\, MUMMENSCHANZ is still a guest on all continents and is still one of the most popular theater attractions in the world.

SUMMARY:Starting Arts presents Mary Poppins
DESCRIPTION:The jack-of-all trades\, Bert\, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense\, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures\, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even adults can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises: “Anything can happen if you let it.”  \nThis production will be performed by talented 9th-12th grade students from the Starting Arts’ Dream Team program. The Dream Team program is an audition-only group in which talented students from all over the Bay Area receive top notch training in music\, theatre\, and dance. \nThis performance runs for approximately 2 hours with a 15 minute intermission.

SUMMARY:Actors from the London Stage - Twelfth Night
DESCRIPTION:Mistaken identities\, disguises\, and love triangles: Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night sees the great playwright blending his comic and dramatic devices with masterful dexterity. Even now\, its riches entertain and delight\, with some of Shakespeare’s most famed language bolstered by deeper\, richer currents of love\, desire\, grief\, and transformation. Twelfth Night is a deliriously enjoyable romantic comedy not to be missed. \nShipwrecked on the Illyrian coast\, Viola\, an aristocrat by birth\, searches for her long-lost twin brother Sebastian. Believing him drowned\, she disguises herself as a boy named “Cesario” and goes to work for Duke Orsino\, who is in love with Lady Olivia. Olivia\, mourning the deaths of her father and brother\, instead falls in love with Cesario\, who is herself falling for the Duke.  Meanwhile\, the scheming steward Malvolio endures a series of practical jokes\, creating a delightful tangle of comic complications on the way to a memorably joyful ending. \nFounded in 1975\, Actors From The London Stage is one of the oldest touring Shakespeare theatre companies in the world. Housed and workshopped in the UK and based in the United States at Shakespeare at Notre Dame\, this intensive residency program is truly one of a kind. Coming from such prestigious companies as the Royal Shakespeare Company\, the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain\, and Shakespeare’s Globe\, AFTLS actors are uniquely focused on student engagement across the academic spectrum as well as the creation of a collaborative learning environment in which to experience Shakespeare’s texts and universal themes. Throughout the first week of October\, AFTLS be holding workshops at San José State University. The vibrant hands-on nature of the program provides an extraordinary opportunity to engage faculty and students far beyond the confines of the English and Theatre departments.
