SUMMARY:MUMMENSCHANZ — You and Me
DESCRIPTION:For nearly five decades\, MUMMENSCHANZ has been the epitome of contemporary mask theater worldwide\, crossing language barriers and cultures. Without spoken word\, purely visually\, and completely without music and set design\, only with masks and bodies against a black background\, the artists appear. \nThe MUMMENSCHANZ theater was created in 1972 in Paris\, on the tremendous momentum of its three founders\, after a very instructive school and study period during the sixties and after a three-year experimental trial in various disciplines. \nAfter more than 10 years of creative experimentation and research in all sorts of theaters in Germany and abroad\, accompanied by a passionate love of playing\, including a 3-year Broadway performance (from 1977 to ‘79)\, MUMMENSCHANZ crossed the threshold and began to perform for the whole wide world. With a repertoire of over 100 techniques\, MUMMENSCHANZ is still a guest on all continents and is still one of the most popular theater attractions in the world.

SUMMARY:Black Cab Jazz - Melissa Aldana
DESCRIPTION:On her first jazz quartet album Visions\, award-winning saxophonist Melissa Aldana connects her work to the legacy of Latina artists who have come before her\, creating a pathway for her  own expression. Inspired by the life and works of Frida Kahlo\, Aldana creates a parallel between her experiences as a female saxophone player in a male-dominated community\, and Kahlo’s experiences as a female visual artist working to assert herself in a landscape dominated by men. On Visions\, Aldana adds a new dimension to her sound\, resulting in a transformative movement of expression and self-identity. \nAldana was born in Santiago\, Chile. She began playing the saxophone when she was six\, under the influence and tuition of her father Marcos Aldana\, also a professional saxophonist. Aldana began with alto\, influenced by artists such as Charlie Parker\, Cannonball Adderley\, and Michael Brecker. However\, upon first hearing the music of Sonny Rollins\, she switched to tenor; the first tenor saxophone she used was a Selmer Mark VI that had belonged to her grandfather. \nShe started performing in Santiago jazz clubs in her early teens. In 2005\, after meeting him while he was on tour in Chile\, she was invited by pianist Danilo Pérez to play at the Panama Jazz Festival\, as well as a number of auditions at music schools in the USA. As a result of these introductions she went on to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston\, where her tutors included Joe Lovano\, George Garzone\, Frank Tiberi\, Greg Osby\, Hal Crook\, Bill Pierce\, and Ralph Peterson. \nAldana graduated from Berklee in 2009\, relocating to New York City to study under George Coleman. She recorded her first album\, Free Fall\, released on Greg Osby’s Inner Circle Music imprint in 2010. Her live shows in this period included performances at the Blue Note Jazz Club and the Monterey Jazz Festival\, and her second album\, Second Cycle\, was released in 2012. In 2013\, aged 24\, she was the first female musician and the first South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition\, in which her father had been a semi-finalist in 1991. The prize was a $25\,000 scholarship\, and a recording contract with Concord Jazz. Reporting her win\, the Washington Post described Aldana as representing “a new sense of possibility and direction in jazz.” \nIn addition\, Aldana has been awarded the Altazor National Arts Award of Chile\, and the Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award. She has played concerts alongside artists such as Peter Bernstein\, Kevin Hays\, Christian McBride\, and Jeff “Tain” Watts\, and many festivals including the Copenhagen Jazz Festival\, Twin Cities Jazz Festival\, Umbria Jazz\, Vienna Jazz Festival\, and Providencia Jazz Festival in Chile. She also performed with Jimmy Heath at the 2014 NEA Jazz Masters Award Ceremony\, and was invited to Jazz at Lincoln Center by Wynton Marsalis. \nIn 2012 Aldana had formed a group\, Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio\, with Cuban drummer Francisco Mela and Chilean bassist Pablo Menares\, a friend from the jazz scene in Santiago several years prior. In July 2014 this group released their self-titled debut album on Concord Jazz\, a recording deal that had formed part of Aldana’s prize for winning the Thelonious Monk Award. The group released their second album in March 2016 titled Back Home\, on Word of Mouth Music\, with drummer Mela replaced by Jochen Rueckert.

SUMMARY:SJZ: WinterFest: Sheléa w/ SJSU Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Sheléa’s sultry sound is an exciting oasis in an age of auto-tune; blending traditional pop\, jazz\, R&B\, and soul\, she brings a contemporary edge to classics and a classic touch to contemporary pop standards. \nSheléa began as a songwriter/vocalist with legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. This early experience led to writing and producing for Chanté Moore’s album Love the Woman and recording vocals on major motion picture soundtracks for Hotel Rwanda\, Akeelah and the Bee\, and Be Cool. Sheléa’s debut album Love Fell On Me was released in 2014\, featuring heavyweights Stevie Wonder\, Brian McKnight\, and Narada Michael Walden. \nIn 2012\, Sheléa performed at the White House to honor composers Burt Bacharach and Hal David with the Gershwin Prize. Then\, in 2015\, she headlined a tour with Kirk Whalum\, Gerald Albright\, and Norman Brown\, and soon after joined mentor Stevie Wonder for his Songs in the Key of Life tour. In 2016\, Sheléa returned to the White House to perform with Anthony Hamilton as part of PBS’ Smithsonian Salute to Ray Charles. Then\, in 2017\, Sheléa had the distinct honor of being selected by Quincy Jones to be the first vocalist for his jazz club Q’s Bar and Lounge at the Palazzo Versace Dubai where she performed a month-long residency. In 2012\, she joined Annie Lennox\, Herbie Hancock\, Joan Osborne\, Patti Austin\, and the South African Children’s Choir at the Kennedy Center to perform for the UN International AIDS Conference. Most recently\, in 2019\, Sheléa starred in the concert special QUINCY JONES PRESENTS: SHELÉA broadcast on PBS. Soon after this\, she released her much-anticipated third album Pretty World: Through the Eyes of Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

SUMMARY:Catalyst Quartet w/ Imani Winds (Borderlands)
DESCRIPTION:Two leading chamber ensembles join forces for a program that combines their high-energy virtuosity and brilliant programming. The concert features a new work composed by Catalyst Quartet violinist\, Jessie Montgomery\, that was inspired by her great-grandfather’s experience during the Great Migration in the United States.  \nImani Winds \nOver the course of their 20-plus year career\, Grammy-nominated quintet Imani Winds\, has discovered what audiences value most from their concerts: a sense of connection—with the music\, the performers\, the composers\, the artistry\, and beyond. Extolled by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “what triumph sounds like”\, Imani Winds has created a distinct presence in the classical music world through their dynamic playing\, culturally relevant programming\, virtuosic collaborations\, and inspirational outreach programs.  \nCatalyst Quartet  \nHailed by the New York Times at their Carnegie Hall debut as “invariably energetic and finely burnished…playing with earthy vigor\,” Catalyst Quartet is comprised of top Laureates and alumni of the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Competition. Known for “rhythmic energy\, polyphonic clarity\, and tight ensemble-playing\,” the ensemble has toured throughout the United States and abroad\, including sold-out performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.\, at Chicago’s Harris Theater\, Miami’s New World Center\, and Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall. The quartet has also appeared as concerto soloists with the Bogatá Filarmónica\, the Sphinx Virtuosi\, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

SUMMARY:Black Cab Jazz — Matt Wilson Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Few musicians embody the spontaneous energy of jazz like Matt Wilson. The New York-based drummer combines buoyant zeal\, idiosyncratic style\, infectious humor\, joyous swing\, and an indomitable spirit of surprise. Together\, with his universally recognized personal warmth\, these qualities have made Wilson one of the most in-demand players and educators on the modern jazz scene\, both beloved and respected by his peers\, elders\, and students. Not bad for a mischievous Midwestern boy from Knoxville\, Illinois. \nWhether anchoring an all-star group at the White House\, juggling tricky rhythmic swerves with his own quartets\, celebrating the holidays with his Christmas Tree-O\, exploring the poetry of Carl Sandburg\, sensitively supporting vocalists such as Dena DeRose\, presenting concerts at a neighborhood church\, or donning a superhero cape to inspire young musicians to embrace their individuality\, Wilson approaches music as a man on a mission: fostering a lively and passionate connection between music and people\, whether they be playing or listening to it. \n\n \n\nBlack Cab Jazz is a brand new collaboration between San Jose Jazz\, San José State University\, and the Hammer Theatre\, bringing to you an intimate cabaret experience featuring some of the best names in modern jazz.

SUMMARY:Kakani Katija: Designed by Nature
DESCRIPTION:A former member of the U.S. International Figure Skating Team\, bioengineer Kakani Katija now studies the graceful movements of life below the surface. Join her for a fascinating look at one of the least explored ecosystems on our planet—the ocean’s midwaters—and learn how its inhabitants could lead to breakthroughs in bio-inspired design. Designers and engineers have drawn inspiration from our natural world for decades\, creating innovations as groundbreaking as manned flight\, and Katija’s own early work has led to energy efficient jellyfish-inspired robotics. Now\, she studies little-known sea creatures that have the potential to make a big impact on some of our world’s most critical problems. \nSpeaker Bio \nKakani Katija received her PhD in Bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology and is dedicated to developing underwater technologies to better observe biological and physical processes where they happen in the ocean. \nHer research and instrument development efforts have contributed to our understanding of nutrient cycling in the oceans\, biologically induced mixing of the oceans\, ecology of gelatinous and soft-bodied invertebrates in deep-sea environments\, and bio-inspired design. \nShe is currently a Principal Engineer and Principal Investigator of the Bioinspiration Lab at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute\, where she develops advanced imaging tools to measure biological-physical interactions\, electronics tagging packages to deduce organism behavioral response to a changing environment\, and autonomous underwater vehicles using stereo tracking to address a wide range of marine science questions. \nA former ice dancer and member of the US International Figure Skating Team\, she is an active scientific diver\, conducting field expeditions in various locations around the world using technologies she has developed. Kakani was named a National Geographic Emerging Explorer in 2011 and a Kavli Research Fellow in 2013\, and she has received generous funding support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation\, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation\, National Geographic Society\, and the National Science Foundation. When not in the lab/ocean\, she can be found in the backcountry with her husband and dog.

SUMMARY:Shannon Wild: Pursuit of the Black Panther
DESCRIPTION:Wildlife photographer and cinematographer Shannon Wild is a passionate conservationist who lives in Africa but works wherever the wildlife calls. In her 15 years documenting wildlife\, she’s been mauled by a cheetah\, charged by an elephant\, lions\, and buffalo\, and bitten countless times by snakes and lizards. But her most recent assignment might prove her most difficult yet: producing a documentary about a rare black panther—the only one living in 250 square miles of dense forest in southern India. \nGet an inside look at the challenges and dangers of tackling an assignment in an unforgiving environment\, from the narrow dirt roads to extreme weather to unexpected injuries—and worse. \nSpeaker Bio\nShannon Wild is an Australian wildlife photographer and cinematographer based in South Africa\, working all over the world for clients such as National Geographic\, WildAid\,  and the UN. She is also an ambassador for various conservation organizations and the founder of Wild In Africa jewelry\, which helps raise money for conservation. \nShannon has written three books\, including one on reptile ecophysiology\, a topic she’s passionate about which started her interest in photography. Her other two books provide instruction on animal photography. \nShannon has spent more than a year and a half in India focused on finding and filming elusive and rare melanistic leopard—referred to as a black panther. The project has meant countless hours in the forests of southeastern India battling weather extremes\, incredibly dense forest\, and\, during filming\, a spinal injury. \nHer passion for protecting and documenting wildlife for the world has driven her to overcome not only her own self-imposed doubts and limits\, but others’ as well.

SUMMARY:Bang-Bang You're Dead!
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Film and Theatre’s School Touring Ensemble Program (STEP) presents its theatrical production of Bang Bang You’re Dead! written by William Mastrosimone and directed by Buddy Butler\, to help enable and empower students to put an end to the escalating trend of violence and bullying in schools today. \nRIPPED FROM TODAY’S HEADLINES. This play tackles the subject of mass school shootings from the point of view of the shooter. The goal is to help middle and high school students understand the tragedies and complexities of school violence and to take preventive actions against it. Bang Bang You’re Dead! urges today’s generation to take control and fix this problem now… \nMastrosimone appeals to potential killers to change their mindset—that in making the choice to bring a gun to school there is nothing to be gained and everything to lose. Furthermore\, he asks all students to be aware and diligent when it comes to violent threats from their peers. Bang Bang You’re Dead! is a resource for dealing with a broken world that’s violent\, unhealthy\, unfair\, and beyond the power of anyone to fix except today’s generation. \nTHE TIME TO STOP SCHOOL VIOLENCE IS NOW! \nBang Bang You’re Dead! will tour local and Bay Area schools during the week of November 17th\, 2019 and play at the Hammer Theatre Center’s Hammer 4 Theatre for four performances. December 4th\, 5th\, and 6th @11 AM for school matinees and December 7th @ 7PM for a public performance. All performances are free and will have a talk-back following.

SUMMARY:A Merry-Achi Christmas - Mariachi Sol de Mexico
DESCRIPTION:How is Christmas celebrated in the Southwest? With traditional carols played\nby a mariachi of course! And this November\, Mariachi Sol de Mexico®\, with the blazing sounds of its 13-piece ensemble\, brings to life a festive\, joyous holiday celebration. \nEnjoy a fusion of the traditional holiday spirit with the color\, and the traditions\, of Mexican and American Christmas songs and carols. The traditions are brought to life by Sol de Mexico’s spectacular artistic execution. Experience this unique fiesta of favorite holiday tunes from both sides of the border! \nAbout the Performers\nUnprecedented\, unrivaled\, and uninhibited\, the impact of Jóse Hernández and his Sol de Mexico on mariachi and all music is undeniable. After forming Mariachi Sol de Mexico® in 1981\, Jóse’s charismatic arrangements and signature trumpet playing made the group an instant and lasting success; Sol de Mexico has played to sold out halls from New York’s Lincoln Center to Viña del Mar in Santiago\, Chile. Not only were they the first Mariachi group to play concerts in Beijing\, China and Pyongyang\, North Korea\, the shows were sold out! \nRight from the start\, Jóse has been innovator as evidenced by creating a cohesive collaboration with symphonies throughout the United States. The marriage of styles is so seamless that it seems natural now. “Everybody in Latin America serenades their girlfriend or their wife with mariachi music—because we see it in the movies. But it has evolved so much over the last 20 years\, it’s almost like a classical art form”\, Jóse says. \nThe versatility of Sol de Mexico to expand to new audiences has led to fabulous\, unexpected collaborations\, such as with the Beach Boys and Willie Nelson. Within the world of Latin music\, Sol de Mexico has played alongside stars such as Vicente Fernández\, Selena\, José Feliciano\, and a record-breaking concert tour with the one and only Luis Miguel. Jóse’s records have been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards and it is a tribute to the impact of Jóse that Sol de Mexico was invited to play at the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards. \nBut more than awards and credits\, it is the passion and love of the mariachi tradition that courses through Jóse’s veins into audiences’ hearts. Although he has played for heads of state\, it is not surprising to see Jóse perform at his famous mariachi restaurant\, Cielito Lindo. Arranging and writing mariachi music is a legacy that Jóse respects and loves.

Thank you.\n\nIn 2017\, Quiana Lynell made her salient mark on the jazz-and-beyond musical world as a wise\, heartfelt\, warm vocalist whose voice is singular in its soul\, intensity\, ecstasy\, and outright spiritual courage.
